Homage to Gottfried Lindauer is a series of paintings on wood that we have pursued for many years. Gabriel Heimler’s professor in Budapest was himself, as Gottfired Linauer, a pupil of Gustav Klimt. Frienensreich Hundertwasser also linked to that same Viennese lineage and came to New Zealand in the seventies to share his creativity. As Heimler & Proc, descendants of the same vanished Austro-Hungarian empire, we began this series in homage to both our artistic masters and to the profound respect Lindauer showed toward the Māori people. As he was one of the earliest artists in Aotearoa to bear witness to Maori dignity and culture, his portraits form the foundation of our ongoing artistic tribute.
