Inside View, 2016

In the Inside View series, Heimler & Proc take the window as both frame and vantage point — looking outward onto cityscapes to construct an artistic vision of lived life.

The works are structured through what the artists term their ‘template’: Edmund Husserl’s concept of the lifeworld. As Husserl introduced in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology (1936):

“In whatever way we may be conscious of the world as universal horizon, as coherent universe of existing objects, we, each ‘I-the-man’ and all of us together, belong to the world as living with one another in the world; and the world is our world, valid for our consciousness as existing precisely through this ‘living together’.”

In this sense, the lifeworld is understood as the horizon of all experience — the ever-present background upon which all things appear as themselves and become meaningful.

Through the window, the city is not merely observed, but revealed as our shared world: intimate, collective, and continuously constituted through our being-with-one-another.
